If you entered the income as "other uncommon income" and answered the testing questions correctly, it would show up as "other income" and you would not be charged self employment tax. Fellowship amounts are nontaxable where: • The recipient is an individual, who is a candidate for a degree at an educational organization such as Harvard University (i.e., undergraduates or graduate students, but not post docs); and • The fellowship amount is used for "qualified tuition and related expenses."
