The only thing that will make a 400ex unreliable is a 440 kit done cheaply. If you're going as far as putting a xr400 head gasket in you might as well do a Higher compression piston or even bore it. It is well worth it. Go with a 11:1 87mm (416) and a stage 1 or 2 hotcam. Oh and get yourself a UNI filter.The 400X is responsive and powerful, but it’s much more smooth. The 450R’s power advantage made it faster in easy, open terrain; on big hills; and even on tight, difficult, technical trails—for our pro racer.
